The work of Food 4 Farmers directly addresses food in-security in coffee country.  The Coffeelands Foundation believes that the farmers who grow our coffee and their communities - as farmers - should be able to have adequate, year-round food supply. We work with Food 4 Farmers to help make this happen, for instance we gave them a grant to help with their beekeeping project.

Here are some food security campaign posters in Nicaragua.  A joint project of Food 4 Farmers and the  Soppexcca co-op, with funding from the Coffeelands Foundation.

Such campaigns and food security workshops train participants, mostly women, in good nutrition, balanced diets, importance of fruit and vegetables, clean water, good hygiene and other practices.

The Mission of Food 4 Farmers is Real and Lasting Food Security Through Collaboration

Our mission is to facilitate the implementation of sustainable food security programs in coffee-growing communities.

We help coffee farming families, co-operatives, and community-based organizations identify challenges, resources, and strategies to build long-term solutions to hunger. We accomplish this by working primarily with coffee-growing organizations to coach and connect them with the expertise they need to implement strategies, and the tools to monitor their progress over time. We don’t import a simplistic, one-size-fits-all model – we help communities identify locally appropriate solutions and strategies – and support them in managing their progress.

We target coffee co-ops and community-based organizations as the gateway to achieve food security, because they have the capacity to organize and educate farmers to take action against hunger.

We believe that empowering farming communities to increase production and consumption of local food has positive effects far beyond food security. With less food aid and production coming from overseas, there is less transport, energy use and impact on climate change. And, just as our communities here in the U.S. benefit from strengthening local food systems, so do coffee-growing communities.
